Abstract Effective public policy implementation is crucial for maintaining national security in Nigeria. However, the country’s security challenges persist despite numerous policies aimed at addressing them. This study examines the relationship between public policy implementation and national security in Nigeria, using the National Security Strategy (NSS) 2019 as a case study. The data collected were analysed through the descriptive method. Using System theory to explain the connectedness of the various segments of the state playing a role in ensuring effective policy implementation .The research identifies institutional weaknesses, resource constraints, and lack of political will as major challenges hindering effective policy implementation. The study reveals that these challenges have contributed to the persistence of security threats, erosion of public trust, and exacerbation of regional and ethnic tensions. The findings underscore the need for a comprehensive approach to policy implementation, involving institutional strengthening, resource mobilization, and sustained political commitment. The study contributes to the literature on public policy implementation and national security, offering valuable insights for policymakers and scholars seeking to address Nigeria’s security challenges
